probably Crystal? I had Yellow on GBC then Crystal came along and blew me away. My brothers pretty quickly had an emulator on the PC so I spent the most time goofing around in that game. Just gave 'er another run last month.

Why do people like crystal/hgss so much? It's like the most boring region, awful Pokemon distribution/variety, bad pacing & level scaling issues, only 1 memorable gym leader, etc. Is it really only because you "go back to Kanto"? Is that literally it?

I admit I do really like the aesthetic and music in crystal (not so much in hgss) but the game itself isn't very fun to play imo

The "Pokemon distribution" is just catching the same 5 Kanto Pokemon that are level 15-20 until you finish johto and get to Kanto
