I'll start (focusing on the main games)
3 > 2 > 1 > 5 > 4 > 6 > 7 > 8
Despite the obvious flaws Hoenn has the map design is by far the best. The way you explore it and the way it closes in on itself is beautiful in a way that they can get away with giving you HM fly very late without it downgrading the gameplay. Also amazing soundtrack + Battle Frontier.
Johto had the most soul, lots of optional areas and for a gameboy game it felt incredibly alive.
Kanto had a pretty fun map exploration too with the way you have to hover around Saphron City and a decent amount of freedom on how you want to explore the world. Also I liked that Gen 1 & 2 did not have a story that revolved around legendaries.
5 shows Gamefreak tried, I really like that in B/W you could only use new pokemon, but holy crap the map was linear, thats something I cant over.
X/Y were actually pretty great games upon the Lucario tower introduced Mega Evolutions. The pacing was amazing, the pokemon distribution great and there was a lot to do. Unfortunately the rest of the game is garbage.
Alola just doubles down on every bad thing previous generations introcued: long cutscenes, free healing items, linear map, little side quests and Gen 8 just completely takes the cake.
