Maybe this was just me but I always thought the pillar was actually just a giant floating gameboy, I didn't realize the black was meant to be the top of the pillar

The central pillar is called a Shinbashira, the other layers transfer some of their stresses onto it and it provides a low center of gravity.

Well, technically there's Silver battling with the Sage on the top of the tower. I always thought that was the reason the pillar was swinging.
