The Totem fights were a step in the right direction, and while I don't feel Gym Leaders need to be phased out or anything, stuff like this does spruce things up every once in a while
Also, while the loss of PSS, Pokenav and friend Safari was terrible, the Pokepelago was amazing and should have stayed in the series permanently
No rematches against unique trainers was bad, but Title defense is amazing as a concept and the Battle Tree did well (especially because having the regular course not forcing lv50 on you let you quickly get any items you needed without hassle)
The really terrible part about gen 7 was that UM and USUM are basically the same thing, so any gripes you had with one, you would inevitably have with the other and owning the first set felt insulting due to the straight additions the Ultra version had
Z moves were okay, but Megas weren't dropped so you could use whatever you wanted
