What's your pick for most overrated Pokemon? I'd go with gen 1 Gyarados. It takes so much effort to evolve the guy, and then he's just a worse and slower-leveling version of Nidoking. He's just not worth using.

Having a physical Electric-type move other than Thunder Fang or Wild Charge with it being 80 BP or higher and not having recoil would unironically be a major improvement.

Nah, Gen 1 Jolteon and Vaporeon were great. Jolteon was the best electric type you could get until Zapdos, and Vaporeon is available way before Starmie.

Did you try playing through gen 1 recently? Magikarp is in the slow experience group, start at level 5, learns tackle at 15, and evolves at 20. It's a giant pain in the ass that's not necessary, since Nidoking learns the same moves Gyarados does.

Admittedly the limited selection of Electric-Types in DP helped, I mean it was Luxray, Raichu or Pachirisu and if you wanted Raichu you were waiting until you could get to the Trophy Garden. I think Platinum helped nip Luxray's untempered usefulness in the butt a bit by adding Electivire and Magnezone.

Gen 1 Gyarados had a high Special stat so it was good even without the Phys/Special split, only in gen 2 does Gyarados suck because it loses the STAB options from Gen 1 but doesn't get Intimidate or Dragon Dance from gen 3.

While most Water starters are strong you can almost always catch a Water type that's nearly as good or even better than your starter very easily. In comparison Fire types are very rare and most grass types are pretty shit relative to the starters.

Only 1 stat is lower than Nidoking's. The only other thing it really misses out on is OHKO cheese.

Actually Kingler's speed is 75, which means it has a 255/256 crit rate with Crabhammer, effectively giving it a 180 power 90 acc STAB move, even if it comes from its shitty base 50 special, its power is right between Alakazam's Psychic and Lapras' Blizzard.
