Yea I say go for it. XY has flaws but they're overblown. If you leave the xp share on, then rotate team members out regularly or you will be like 10 levels above everything the whole game. Also Amie is fun but just be warned it has broken benefits such as more xp gain, dodging hits, healing status and higher crit rate. It can be fun but if you want any semblance of challenge I would suggest leaving the xp share of and not using amie.
The positives are a huge regional dex with tons of interesting mons to use, Imo very nice looking graphics, Character customization, and a still active online meaning you can use wondertrade to get cool lategame mons, mons with egg moves, mons not in the regional dex etc. Definitely worth trying at least once.
