reminder that Super Mystery Dungeon is better than Explorers of Sky and worth your time.
>hardest game in series
>most refined gameplay in series
>all dungeons shorter but harder than previous games; simultaneously less tedious and more challenging
>huge variety in learnsets instead of Tackle and Water Gun for 80% of the game
>more moves with different properties instead of 90% of moves being 1-tile
>emera system adds lots of variety, makes the game more like a roguelike, encourages exploration of entire floor
>11/10 god-tier music, unironically one of the best vidya soundtracks from the past five years
>items are actually useful and managing them is necessary
>basic attack nerfed but PP for other moves and Elixir availability increased, so you're forced to diversify your movepool instead of mashing A whenever you don't have a favorable matchup like previous games

Nope, that alone doesn't invalidate the leaps and bounds Super makes in every other department.

In Explorers, the gameplay was a hassle I had to put up with to get to the entertaining parts of the story.
In Super, the gameplay IS the meat of the game and I actually looked forward to each dungeon.

in my opinion, play the originals if you dont mind grinding more. PLay the remakes if you want an easier but more balanced gameplay system. Also depends on whether you like 2d sprites or 3d models

I really wish Super didn't have that shitty recruitment system. Not just the fact a pokemon you want could be locked behind a chain of 80 others, but because of the fact they randomly lock out different recruits every day so you can't have a consistent team.
The game was so close to being a straight upgrade

I just think it's cool that Explorers went in a different direction with the Pokemon franchise that wasn't forced end of the world. Everything tier together real smooth and you somewhat cared about Grovyle, and Dialga was the most challenging ingame boss.

since this is the pmd thread i guess i can talk about this now.
I made a QoL romhack that has a new starterset and does stuff like faster text, L+A/B/Y/X to attack, 1000 item storage from the start, sped up drinkmaking and gives everyone Trap Avoider to start with like they deserve, among many other things. Anything more I should be sure to add in?

Generally I put Nectars in forest-based dungeons, which are +10IQ a piece so you can get ahold of at least a few IQ skills midgame. I also shat a shitload of gummis over Marine Resort, maybe made it too easy to get max IQ but fuck it, that's a postgame dungeon anyways

I sped up Xatu unboxing as much as I knew how to. It's definitely faster, but only by maybe a second.
By tips, what do you mean? Also i made the Kec shops sell better shit after graduation so money actually has a use.

You'd have a shitload of text to change, and likely graphics to change. It's certainly doable but it's stuff that's way out of my league. The webm i posted and the Kangaskhan Rocks I added to the cafe/dojo are about the most complex things i managed, outside of darkrai having new minions

I perused Skytemple a bit and it seems like the program does a lot of that stuff for you. It's not paint by numbers but you could get stuff done with a little learning, cutscenes included.

As someone that knows absolutely zero coding, even i managed to do something like move around pokemon inside of the cutscenes and swap them out for other pokemon. It's not completely foolproof, took me quite a bit of bumbling around looking for the right scene to mess with. You'll have to technically mess with lines of code to change things like text boxes in places like Treasure Town, but that's not too complex at least

I really don’t like how the dungeon generation algorithm in the post-Gates games works, Gates and Super generate rooms that all look the same and extremely long corridors, RTDX improves on this but turns almost every floor into a boring and generic grid as a result, the DS games have more varied floors as shown here:

as someone who's worked on romhacks for other games before savestates don't really work if you try and use them between versions. I'm not technically adept enough to explain exactly why but it probably has something to do with the rom data being changed between versions and save state takes all of that data into account, while an actual in-game save only cares about the data it needs to save.

I get that save states wont work between versions, but the way they worded it makes it sound like save states corrupt the save itself somehow.
Made me wonder if there was some sorcery going on in the background, like GF's attempt at piracy prevention by making save states corrupt your save if the current playtime is lower than the last save's playtime.

I agree that Super has the best gameplay in the series but the second Explorers of Sky gets a remake with updated gameplay and visuals it'll definitively be the series' top dog again giving you a little bit of everything that makes the series special.

I think Super’s gameplay was way too focused on surviving with items, lots of enemies in Super are OP and have room-wide or piercing moves that kill in 2 hits (SUBMERGED CAVE) and wands are extremely vital for disabling the enemies, and praying to RNG for good emeras like Ally Reviver, which doesn’t feel like prior PMD gameplay

in the floor spawn list? yeah.
I tried to alleviate the problem by genociding all Unown that don't drop the stones you need, as well as placing freebie Nectars in Aegis Cave so it won't feel so wasteful to rerun each segment. If I can't guarantee their recruitment, I can at least make it easier to get to them again.

I liked all of this. It made me play more carefully rather than smashing through everything with just a link combo that could kill everything in one turn, and gave me a reason to fill my bag with something other than apples and oran berries.

My two playthroughs didn't feel like that. Hell, I sorta dreaded finding a strong emera like ally reviver because it meant the rest of the dungeon would play itself.

That they do. Granted, they still don't have sleeping animations, adding those was beyond my limited level of expertise.
Male/Female protags have almost exclusively different startersets, with only 1 pokemon shared between them.

I'm using MelonDS for general use now, but Desmume is where my 100% save is at the ready. Plus fast forward seems a bit faster there, which makes rushing into dungeons/town to test changes quicker.

Generally the worse ones in vanilla got buffed somehow, usually via ability changes (no Run Away on Zigzagoon/Poochyena for one) or with an egg move or two to start, like Hoppip, who now also learns Sunny Day in the lategame.
Consequently this makes those mons more of a threat when you run across them in a dungeon.

You know someone mentioned this to me before, but honestly there really weren't any good options to choose from that would fit. Jirachi, Manaphy, Celebi, every other small legendary already appears in the plot in some form.
At best I could pick Celebi since it wouldn't have been shiny, but honestly its moveset aint the hottest, it's mostly support moves that don't work well in a PMD setting (it only has 4 attacking moves via levelup), and I can't even use the solution of "make it learn egg moves" like I did for some other mons. The only other option would be another Mew for that side.

Right now i'm mostly concerned with how balanced everything will be. I've done one run through with the Wooper/Mareep duo and half of one with Drifloon/Smoochum, the final fight was pretty doable with the former thanks to the Manual Control patch.
So far nobody else has done a full run of the game, so I'm wondering if I went a little overboard with the Darkrai fight.

Well all it would have to do would be to check the gender of the MC and the partner which probably wouldn't be too hard to do if that's actually a stored value somewhere the game can reference. But does PMD romhacking let you even have certain dialogue choices set flags that will make certain dialogue later on appear/not appear? I don't remember anything like that happening in Explorers, none of the dialogue choices have any long-term effects.

Since you have access to the code there might be a way, but i've literally never coded anything in my life before this hack. The only time I've ever touched lines of code were when i was adding Kanga Rocks to spinda's cafe and making Wobbuffet shut the hell up.

RTDX had the fainted mons join with a Rare Quality. I remember it being more of a pain in the ass than anything. mostly because I just wanted to automode through the Silver Shithole's bland 99 floors of unremarkable water dungeon and automode homes in on fainted mons and also throws up "there's still a fainted mon, want to progress without giving it an apple?" message when you try to leave the floor

I think it would work. Take the rescue requests system and expand it. Add more asynchronous multiplayer elements like that (not sure if that's the right word, but hopefully you'll get what I mean). Ultimately it would still be single player, but everyone else's playthroughs would influence the world you play in.

In some dungeons they tend to stay set to 1 particular pattern, I recall going through Wish Cave/Silver Trench and the majority of the floors were 4x4 grids of similarly sized rooms, maybe with one or two rooms swapped out with a hallway. Not all of them follow this pattern, but it was rather noticeable.
It's still better than SMD, which can spawn awkwardly shaped rooms, and if those rooms are monster houses, the traps that are placed throughout it can spill into hallways, resulting in impossible to avoid traps.

is it broken? no my partner choices were randomized, and all the pokemon in game are randomized.
Mudkip is my favourite pokemon, and several times in the past when ive played this game without a randomizer ive gotten him as my starter (without the use of a guide).
I guess its fate then.

Mudkip was what I got as quiz result in the very first PMD game I played, and I also got them again when the Remake came out, plus I took that one long ass online quiz and got them there too. I personally have more affinity with one of the newer starters not accounted for yet in these quizzes, but I can see Mudkip too or specifically Marshtomp.

It's difficult because there are only like 50 free slots to add new Pokemon in and I don't know if anyone has figured out an asm hack that expands that list yet.
So no matter what you are gonna end up with an awkward mixed bag of stuff.
