Nu-anime is done through CGI, so they get to use different animation techniques. They've made it more energetic and fluid, and while some designs are a tad simplified for artistic reasons, overall the quality has degraded any.
Older anime is done by hand, and it shows in many places. Although it has a specific look and feel not found in the newer anime, that's not necessarily a good thing. Everything's far stiffer, and things feel a bit washed out in comparison to the modern anime. Characters barely move in each scene, except under specific circumstances, for example.
Comparing stills isn't exactly fair, but even if we are comparing stills, they both have their own merits.
