>has one of the least entertaining protagonistsThough I wouldn't call him bad, just less fun and occasionally prone to being cringy; he's still better than the protagonists of the X/Y and Sun/Moon arcs. His problem is that his specialty is literally "battling" (albeit in unique settings), when Red and Platinum already share that distinction while both being more entertaining to follow as characters.
>follows directly off the tail of the FR/LG arc, which is almost completely shit outside of anything that involved Silver, and carries over a plot thread from it >doesn't have Ruby or Sapphire appear until like halfway through>has one of the stupidest premises for a main villain Which is why I said if you could only read one arc, it would be Ruby/Sapphire or Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. Those are consistently good throughout and boast some of Pokemon Special's most enjoyable protagonists and plotlines. (Sapphire is the best female protagonist and Pearl is the best male protagonist, if you're asking me.)
Most of the modern arcs are actually pretty crappy. XY and Sun/Moon are snoozefests to me, with X especially being a cringy little shit. The ORAS arc is pretty good, at least, since it does its own take of the Delta Episode - and since it features Ruby and Sapphire as protagonists again and doesn't dicksuck Zinnia nearly as hard, it is a strictly better version of the Delta Episode. You can hit that up if you want, though it's not super necessary to R/S. Ruby/Sapphire arc is mostly self-contained.
