... By removing a bunch of QOL improvements that didn't make the game easier by virtue of dumbing down the game.
Also, it wasn't just us, but no one in 2006 knew which direction to go, which meant LOTS of backtracking to figure out where to fucking go. There were basically NO hints in the English version on where to go for a lot of these story objectives, which by the by, isn't a fucking good sign for any supposedly "well designed" games.

The hell? This is virtually impossible unless you don't pay attention to the game or are braindead. It's not even like the regi puzzle in RSE that was inconvenient for people who didn't have the manual. It literally takes basic common sense to find out what to do next in a pokemon game

I have played the games you idiot. Let's use one example from the game; after defeating Wake in Pastoria City and going to Celestic Town, you get Surf. Now you can just remember that there was a fishing spot dead end right next to Jubilife City early in the game, or you can just look at the map and you'll notice that there is a city right next to Jubilife City with water in between, so you go there. It's literally that easy

Things like this require genre knowledge/experience. Most people don't take note of a random body of water, they don't log it in your memory. People who have played plenty of pokemon know well enough to think "Oh, that lake ends off screen, I gotta remember this once I get surf" but there's no reason to think of that for a normal player.

Generation 4 fucking sucked as a newcomer to the Pokemon franchise. I'm glad I got HG for the following Christmas so I could hone my Pokemon experience slightly. I still have my Pokewalker.
