Personally for me sometimes there are pokemon I'd like on my team but aren't available until late game. So gameplay is put at a standstill until I properly level them up to my current pokemon. Exp all helped me with that here and there. Now it takes too much out of early game leveling since It usable right at the start of the game. I guess it mainly works for people who just overuse/overlevel their starter until they find a opponent who can still easily knock them out, leaving with just underleveled shit they have on their teams. That no longer is a problem now with this enabled.
I'd hate to see this worsen by gamefrak by making it even easier with the entire team level up together at the same time so levels are even more easily consistent.
