What is the timeframe for zoomers? I was born in 94 and was 15 when HGSS came out in the US, and they're my favorite games.

Ehh the PokeGear is pretty unreliable for Rematches and the items, the VS Seeker was the best iteration of the concept of rebattling trainers and they should've brought it over, I get that the PokeGear adds a degree of interactivity between the player and NPCs beyond just battling and I think the dialogue aspect of the PokeGear Calls would be worth keeping, but I think it'd be better to have migrated the battle aspect to the VS Seeker making any leveling the player would want to do be much less obtuse and reliant of RNG.

Those spots are good if you're like level 40, but for the real high level stuff you're shit out of luck. HGSS fixed that problem, sure, but the original isn't HGSS. It didn't help that they made unlocking the GS Dodrio gameboy so needlessly difficult, too.

the biggest flaw in gen 2 is the lack of variety in mons, which made it infuriating to replay without trading some over. you'd have to wait until the 7th gym to get a full party depending on what you wanted

sure, but for the first half of the game one can't deny the lack of variety. mareep, bellsprout, pidgey, oddish, startermon etc aren't exactly opening up new choices. saying the lack of mons available is because of pic related doesn't excuse how fucking slow it starts off

In Crystal they are, Teddiursa is found in Dark Cave and Phanpy is found on Route 46 both in the morning. Growlithe meanwhile is found on Route 36 as per usual but it's because they changed the Route so there was Tall Grass east of the Sudowoodo Tree making Growlithe accessible before the first badge.

If you want to go only by Crystal (which is disingenuous but w/e) Mareep isn't even available in that game.
A lot of those mons also have like 5% encounter rates only at a specific time of day, which means they're going to fly completely off the radar for most people's first playthrough.

Yeah there are a lot of things HGSS could do to be better, that's kinda the annoying thing with the series, a lot of the entries do one or two things the best out of all of them but due to how many things there are they all have issues against one another. I'd say that HGSS is probably one of the best games in the series but it's not a game I'd consider to that amazing when considering all video games.

Your mons might be unevolved by then and they certainly haven't learned their best moves yet
Kanto in gen 2 is smaller than in gen 1 that's well documented and there is nothing to do in every city other than battle the gym, the only interesting part is the changes in cinnabar
