I'm pretty sure that out of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and Sega, Nintendo was the first to implement Wi-Fi and everything else was using wired connections with wired adapters for online play. Nintendo was historically the first to attempt online interaction in consoles as early as the Famicom, and continued to attempt it across all their devices barring the Game Boy and GBA, though the GBC actually did have it in Japan with the Mobile Adapter GB. Online play for Nintendo only really began taking off in 2005 when Mario Kart DS was released.

This also somehow triggered an event in my Sapphire where Seedot outbreaks would happen from time to time as well as the Sunday sales at the department store with the exclusive items.

It existed but it didn't show up in devices until the mid 2000s.
The DS was actually kind of surprisingly advanced having wifi built in.
Nokia's first wifi phone was the 9500 and it only released 10 months before the DS

My dad was telling me that when he played Diamond and Pearl all those years ago, the ds wifi wouldn’t even connect as he had WEP protection and not WPA! Crazy how far things have developed

Other way around. OG DSs can only connect to older security like WEP, dunno about WPA1, but it can't even see WPA2.
There's some weird cross over behaviour if you use newer hardware like the 3DS, iirc there was a way to make it work but it was annoying, but you needed a 3DS. Might have worked with DSi, not sure i didn't have one until after DS servers closed.

DSi and 3Ds could use more recent security as the DSi/3Ds network settings would automatically override the DS ones
I don't know if it works for every game or only on DSi enhanced titles though

I just remembered a weird kind of hide and seek with my best friend and his sister using picto chat.
The hiders and seekers would all be on picto chat and would try and use the signal bars to figure out where the other ones are while the hiders taunted the seeker.
Totally forgot about that until now.

Where the fuck did that happen? When I got DP everyone started growing out of pokemon. All we've had from B/W to this year are VGC, nothing this interactive. You don't even have to go outside to get event mons anymore.

My city was lucky enough to have a VGC for 4th and 5th gen. Even in HGSS, the underground was amazing. And then there was an anime con in BW that helped me fill up Black City. In my area, BW was the big Pokemon revival.

The first wi-fi setup in my house didn't even have the option for WEP. Had to connect my laptop to the router by lan cable and host a shitty hotspot there. Good times.

I didn't even have wifi at home during most of the ds events. I brought my ds around everywhere searching for an unencrypted connection.
I could get a weak signal from the parking lot at church. That was the only time I've been excited to go.
