Is it quicker to soft reset or breed for Shines when there's the option for both like with the starters? I was thinking of going for a living shiny dex for this gen.

if you can get shiny genes on a female cyndaquil, its eggs will give you a 1/64 shot at a shiny. you could have your cyndaquil in a day or two if you farm enough

Ah I see, so I could soft reset to get the defense and special dvs I need and then trade it to another game, breed with a random male Cyndaquil to get the increased egg rate for a maximized set up, and even if I don't get a female, this way I could still get a shiny!

yeah. IDing DVs at level 5 would be a challenge though. in order to breed a shiny, a parent needs exactly 10 in def, and either 2 or 10 in spec (spec can be inherited as is, or offset by 8, so 2 works)

a male cyndaquil passes its genes to female offspring, but the problem in cyndaquil's case is that females can't be shiny in gen 2. the way the attack DV factors into both shinyness and gender makes it impossible

Yeah you wont, you'd need to use PKhex or something.

In gen 1 and 2 they were called DVs, not IVs. They were renamed in gen 3.

Yeah but why, and by who?
I refuse to accept it. I think some autist decided to coin that term at some point and it's persisting for no fucking reason. A similar thing happened with IVs but at least everyone knows what that means.

Im pretty sure the devs coined the term Determinate Values and fans came up with Individual Values but gf acknowledges the new term now.

Nope, devs have called it innate strengths or the japanese equivalent and everything else is fan based.
Tonnes of terms we use are just baseless fan creations, gamefreak usually doesnt even weigh in. like shiny and starter pokemon didn't have official names until gen 5 or 6 or something. so shiny and starter are just memes. Going off of memory the official names are "different colored" and "beginning partner" or something like that. Japan had different not official meme names for these too.
This is fine, these things need names and gamefreak wasn't stepping in. What pisses me off is why we have 2 names for the same fucking thing even though one has caught on more.
gen 1/2 IVs are just IVs that have gender and shininess tied to them. also they only have 16 values i guess.

Make sure you get a shiny Tyrogue with the Odd Egg, as you can only get a Tyrogue egg with a Ditto. Living shiny dex implies shiny Ditto though, you might want to use that to breed everything else.

shiny pokemon were called "alt. color pokemon" in gen 3's english text and the jp equivalent they translated from was already used in a ton of official materials
