>>48494331Pretty much for every reason I laid out in
>>48493615, plus his growth in general. If I had to directly compare Ruby and Gold, the deciding factor comes down to a contrast of character "premises", growths/development, interactions with others, and entertainment.
>entertainmentThis is not really a factor I need to have scaled between the three; there was pretty much never a moment in their respective stories where I felt that I was getting bored or just wanted it over with.
>interactions This is probably where Ruby wins the hardest for me. Not that Gold's dynamics with Silver, Crystal, and the senior Dex holders aren't good. They're great and contribute to why he's my second favorite. But I find even more appeal in Ruby's interactions with Sapphire, Wallace, Norman, Courtney, and - dare I say it - Emerald.
>growthI don't really think I need to explain this very much; most people who've read the R/S arc can see how Ruby changes over the course of it.
>character "premises" This is a big case for Ruby in my opinion, because he had what was a pretty uncommon setup for his character. He's a guy whose passion is fucking Pokemon contests. Maybe it's my standards for what's boyish or manly speaking, but that sounded girly as hell to me. And then his dad is still Norman, who is pretty set on seeing his son be a badass. Then he gets into a rivalry with a girl who by all standards has significantly more "cool" interests than he does, and he runs away from home to chase his dreams. It's a pretty weird setup, especially from when I was reading as a kid. I expected to view him as a total loser, too, but then not only did he make contests actually seem interesting, but he also actually turned out to be absolutely brutal in battles when he thinks nobody else is looking, and has a personal reason for not indulging in them often.
I think he's neat.
>>48494362Pass. It's been a while and I couldn't lay out a huge case for it. I just remember really hating it.
