This is what I've encountered with my latest vanilla platinum playthrough. Not enough variety, too much grinding. I'm this close to just popping open PKhex and giving myself 6 Lucky Eggs.

You can catch a yanma with compound eyes, teach it thief, and grind some chanseys if you want to do it the legit way. Note that yanmega drops compound eyes so don't evolve it. This is great for getting moon stones and leppa berries from clefairy, magmarizers from magmar, and electirizer from electabuzz too.

I'm not going to put up with tedious, annoying grinding to avoid tedious, annoying grinding. By the time I did all that shit and managed to get a set of 6 lucky eggs normally I could have just been grinding normally and gotten the same results in the same painstakingly long amount of time. No other game in the franchise requires that much grinding, even within its own generation HGSS require way less grinding and thus are way better games.

Are you serious? At least there's wild chansey, a lucky egg chance you can boost, and the vs seeker. Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 (Hoenn only) are far more grindy than Platinum.

in my latest platinum playthrough the hard part is keeping chimchar on the team since I have so much other shit

I'm running a Scizor, Umbreon, Houndoom, and constantly rotating between other monsters. Togetic, Bibarel, and Lickitung come to mind, but there's also my Luxray, and Staravia which got me through the first part of the game with Intimidate strats.

Nah, I'm going to teach it Toxic. Also, my Umbreon has Wish because I spent some time breeding. The Eevee they give you for free, I also turned into an Umbreon, but that was before I learned Wish was an Egg move. I spent some time and got Leafeon and Espeon with the extra eggs.

fwiw I haven't actually used Umbreon in a battle yet, in part because I don't have the toxic TM, but with the way the playthrough has been going so far I feel like it's probably just gonna rape everything. My team is already pretty busted too. Scizor has been wrecking everything in mostly one shot. It has Roost too.

I think the problem is less overall variety and more variety by route. Most routes are very similar in pokemon distribution to those adjacent to them, i.e. the first few routes are all Starly-bidoof-shinx-fourth pokemon fitting of the environment.

Are you literally me? I have a Gengar on Let's Go Pikachu, Platinum, and I recently just caught a Gastly in Crystal. I was excited at first but I don't think I'll end up using her. Gengar was blasting through the first quarter of Platinum and was a great help in LGP.

Gengar's a pretty common boomer mainstay.
It's got retardedly good stats, it's downright broken in gen 2 where the lack of physical special split gives it the elemental punch attacks for coverage.

I have my favorites and I can't get most of them (easily) in base Pt. I mean you have to fucking figure out how honey trees work just to get a heracross, that is fucked up. At least I can get away with giving a pokemon a concussion to get one in HGSS.

Now that gives me memories. I grew up in the days before the internet, so I had a strategy guide, and I'd always go to my parents to see what words were in the guide or in the games. Gen 1 pokemon literally helped me learn to read, and as a result I was reading at a college level by 5th grade. Hope you actually manage to pick up some spanish from your playthrough.
