Do you think GameFreak is trying something new in Generation 9 to expand the concept of Regional Forms or could it be that they don't do anything new and maybe even stop doing Regional Forms?

How would you expand the concept in Generaton 9?

I dont think they have stopped them, its hard to say whether Basculegion, Wyrdeer and Kleavor are regional evolutions or straight up evolutions, I think the only way we will really know is come Gen 9 and if they appear in that regions dex.

For all we know, they are regular evolutions, they just dont appear in the current 8 regions.

I want to believe you but I could see it being a Galarian Farfetch'd situation, where it is almost the same. This Stantler seems to have a strand of hair on its back thats not on the original and maybe its angry look could be part of Hisuian Stantler. Not to mention Basculegion not having two colors which could mean a Hisuian Basculin thats only one color

Regional forms are so fucking genius in every way. They allow for "new" pokemon without adding another number to the inevitable 1000 total they are so desperate to not reach, allow older pokemon to not only be relevant but a chance to be actually viable through new typings, movesets, abilities, evolutions, and slight stat changes, and I prefer most of the updated designs, though that last part is subjective. I hope they never stop doing them

in this case i think there will be two types of regional variants. One with major changes and other with minor changes, seriously, because the only thing that changes this stantler from the johtonian is the strand with hair. Not even the color is different

I just listened back to the original Direct and they say for both Wyrdeer and Basculegion that "Basculin/Stantler that live in the Hisui region can evolve" so no matter if its new forms or the old one, they're gonna be locked behind the climate of Hisui

I quite like the concept as a way to push the Pokemon limit upwards without actually adding any new dex numbers. It helps stretch out the run to 1000.
On top of that it also makes sense from a world building perspective that they make adaptations to different environments, and in the case of the Galarian bird trio, they underwent convergent evolution to resemble the kanto birds.
Alolan Raichu is still a stupid evo reason.

I feel regionals are a much better solution to updating old pokemon compared to megas, since with regionals you could still give buffs or changes to the base forms if they need an extra kick....Its a rip how the only way we get cross gen evos now is through them...but hopefully Gen 9 fixes that

I'd expand it to more legendaries. It would let GF recycle existing legendaries - hopefully fan-favorites - while still bringing something new to the table.

I'd also make a "greatest hits" compilation of both classic pokemon and new regional variants. You'd have some of the top picks from every gen, maybe do a public poll or something on Twitter or TPC website, and then bring back some of them as-is and some of them as regional forms.

The region would be one full of extreme, harsh climates that cause these variants to appear.

I don't think they will be known as regional evolutions. Instead of geography they will be based on time or era. Probably legacy, ancestral, or heritage evolutions.

After introducing the Ultra Beast in Gen VII I always thought they should explore the Pokémon "multiverse" a little more. Would be great to see a cannon universe where we get alternate Pokémon from a different universe altogether. Maybe a universe where the starter types are swapped or different altogether.

They could even use this as a way to utilize some of their beta and scrapped designs that are popular with the fan base. Imagine a universe with the Latias/Blaziken beta, or the beta Girafarig.

Yes anon. it takes Game Freak two years to appear on a new system (Switch launch 2017, SS launch 2019) and like in Gen IV, they pushed out the remake the year after the rehash.

Like I said, wait till next new console. if they didn't piss away Gen III's remake on a dying system, they're not going to fuck away gen V's on Switch. Fuck, you should be HOPING for the next system, give Game Freak more time and experience making games in free camera from the outset.

I just told you, they pushed out the rehash first before the remake, the last two Gens they did a rehash and remake in the same generational cycle anon. Like I said, they aren't going to launch the remake first, then the rehash, now they moved to DLC delivery for the rehashes. Counter-intuitive to launch a game, launch a different game, then return to the first game to run DLC (partly why Emerald undersold - they did it right in Gen IV and reaped the rewards). And they aren't going to bun a remake, when they can wait a couple years for the next console to launch and to launch their first new Gen on-system for it before doing it. Builds expectation and hype.
