I miss when it was an actual competition and shit like Atari and Sega getting snuffed out because they couldn't hold up. I personally blame the Nintendo fanbase. Once they made it clear that they're "Nintendo for life" and they'll buy anything Nintendo is putting on the table, Nintendo just had no more reason to continue trying because they'd make nearly the same amount of money for less effort anyway.
Pokemon is kind of in a similar boat, although GameFreak has never been able to code for shit anyway.
