Empoleon is known as a very prideful spirit, which fits Defiant quite well. It's also called competitive spirit in Japanese. Keldeo and its compatriots are the Swords of Justice, so obviously having an ability that gives them an edge against the Evil type makes perfect sense, lore-wise.

Competitive didn't exist until Gen 6. Gamefreak won't just change arbitrarily Pokemon's ability. They've only ever done that for Genger IIRC.

I'll give you Scolipede, but Chandelure, Raikou, Entei, and Suicune's retconned abilities were never possible to attain in-game anyway. In any case, it is still very rare for Gamefreak to change a Pokemon's ability after its introduction.

Game Freak's refusal to change stats, abilities, types, ect is bullshit, anyway. If GF wants to make Pokemon a competitive multiplayer game, it should be balanced like a competitive multiplayer game. Meaning regular balance updates, and shit. Changing the stats of Pokemon, or whatever

We are talking about other competitive multiplayer games that are not Pokemon, which you implied all receive regular balance updates. Regular balance updates used to be either rare or non-existent and even today plenty of games don't have regular ones. The mentality that games should be regularly rebalanced is complete zoomer talk.

I picked this guy in my first Platinum playthrough and good lord does he suck shit. He's so bad that they went back and swapped Bide with Bubblebeam for Platinum because otherwise you're stuck with Bubble as your one stab move until 22. I wanted him to be good because he's the only starter I liked.
