I'm worried that a bunch of people are going to genuinely start believing that Pokemon Black and White are bad games, and not because of any of the very real, substantive problems with them, but because of the braindead complaints, strawmen, and dishonest parallels drummed up and regurgitated by /vp/ on the daily. Do you think we can come together now and decide to stop the Gen V is bad meme?

I didn't enjoy Gen 5, or anything that came after it. Therefore, to me, BW was the beginning of the downfall, and possibly the worst games in the franchise.

It was the catalyst for all the series' problems, yet all I see is praise for it everywhere, and hate for Gen 6, even though Gen 5 has most of the same problems Gen 6 has. But no, it "tried something new" and GAME FREAK "risked it all" with BW. Pokémon fans, ans by extension, Nintendo fans, are the biggest shit eaters in all of gaming I swear.

Gen 5 itself was actually well received upon release. The issue is that back then, it was nominally Hoenn and gen 3 that was loathed the most until remake hype overtook the hate.

It'll be the exact same here. People are superficial and easily manipulated by outside opinion, which gets exploited by the markets for profit.

Overworld encounters are the single most massive improvement they've made to the gameplay since Gen 2. I also don't know why you're trying to lump Gen 5 in with 1-4 when Gen 5 didn't add anything meaningful.

Gen 5 isn't exactly awful, but it's definitely my least favorite generation in the series.

It's got plenty of fine music, there's some cool Pokemon, and the routes themselves are okay. It's just one of those games that didn't feel very stand-out to me.

I dunno, OP. I do remember a fair few people on this board liking the game, but with how many of us are on here, there are going to be people who think of every gen as their favorite, as well as least favorite. There's no overarching single mentality.

Functionally, the Totem fights are the same thing as the Gym Leaders. Yes, I know they're harder and occasionally more intricate, but they're still the same. You fight 8 bosses. You get a stamp, and a new move, and then you fight these four/five/six harder bosses at the end of the game.

I am of the opinion that Pokemon didn't/do not really need any animations beyond their intro animation. With some exceptions in Emerald/whichever Gen Scizor's crazy dance is in, I think they peaked in Crystal. A lot of them seem to have a sense of weight to their movement in Crystal on a level that hasn't really been replicated in a mainline game since then. At least, not that I have seen, but if I am wrong, feel free to correct me.

Also, the 4-direction grid-based movement isn't a problem. If it works, it works.

There is nothing bad about 4-direction grid-based movement for a pixel game, though. In fact, grid based movement would be acceptable for a 3D game, if it weren't limited to four directions. Dark Souls 1 and 3 are grid based. DS2 departed from that, and moving in that game sucks.

Yes there is. It's pointlessly slow and clunky. The only argument you could make for keeping it are ice sliding puzzles which BW barely even has and are worse than XY's ice sliding puzzles anyway.

Encounter double battles, improves online VASTLY from Gen 4, every event Pokemon has a battle(believe or not but Gen 4 actually lacked this, but it's not anything new either), most amount of new Pokemon(156, whether or not that's "something new" is up to you), improved the 3D aspects of D/P/Pt and HG/SS, the whole dreamscape thing, Battle Frontier optional Wifi battles edition...
There's plenty of things it tried new, just saying "uh, rotation battles lolzer" is wrong.

Gen 5 was hated on this board since 2010, and I unfortunately bought into that hate. However, that being said, pre-2013 was a lot comfier than now, and anti-Gen 5 sentiment stayed within its own threads. I don't know what the hell happened, but I'm not convinced it was XY's fault, whatever it was.

When Gen 5 came out I was 13 and (naturally) didnt browse 4chan. I grew up on boomer Pokemon media, Indigo League anime, toys, websites, etc, started with Fire Red and bought Yellow specifically so I could catch Missingo after reading about it on TRsRockin, but I absolutely loved Gen 5 and was really fascinated by the fact that "oh you can't catch ANY of the old Pokemon? something to add, the post game mon variety of BW1 felt really lazy, most of the national dex was shoved onto one side of the region after the post game. b2w2 did a better job distributing mons, on top of the stuff ive already mentioned

What problems, exactly? Handholding? That's gen 4, Platinum in particular. Overt focus on legendary plot? Gen 3. Gym Leaders having fewer Pokemon? Fair, I guess, but SWSH gives later Gym Leaders 4 mons at least, which is what Sinnoh had. Making the games "easier?" Entirely subjective, and personally I found GSC and RS to be much easier than anything Unova had.

The problem is that I enjoy both of them and don't feel like they're obnoxious at all. The low HP theme perfectly captures the panic one would have, especially in a higher stakes battle(although I really wished that they had included more versions so it'd fit with each type of battle you had instead of just being one theme for all of them.)
The rival theme I also enjoyed, and I still find myself humming it to this day. It manages to get the quirky personality of Bianca and... actually doesn't service Cheren too well, oh well.
I don't know, it... We different feelings on this. I think over-the-top is a better description though. It's very... it's proud of what it does, and keeps going above and beyond what is necessary. And that's the majority of New York for you anyways, so that makes more sense than obnoxious.

I'd say it's because the idea of starting fresh with a new roster didn't really appeal to everyone. BW also reused archetypes of Pokemon commonly found in other regions, which to some defeated the purpose of not having them to begin with.

I can understand that argument, since to me Unova's roster shined most when it was being original or subverting those past stereotypes, like it did with Volcarona and the bug type.

Gen 1-5 run much faster than any contemporary Pokemon game. The 3D games are slow as fuck and have been since they removed the option to run.
