Sure, you could buy a meal for the night, or you could go through the effort of cooking for yourself. I may not be a great cook, but there's personal satisfaction in having a reward at the end of my struggles.
If you've ever had the pleasure of finding morel mushrooms before, then you might understand. Once a year you gotta get extremely lucky during hours of running around in the woods to hope you can find a few mushrooms that'll last for maybe two meals, but dang if they aren't some of the best flavor experiences you can have despite being just a fleeting moment. You could also cut out all the work and buy from sellers during the season and get to the same result a lot faster, but there is some personal pride to be had in doing things yourself.
If you have trouble understanding that people enjoy doing things for themselves for personal satisfaction, you have some serious sociopathic problems.
