It retains a few flaws of the original like the handholding and cutscenes (somewhat reduced but still there), but also adds much more to the game like actual postgame, more pokemon (also the last game to have them all), tons of side quests and mini games, decent difficulty and in general much more stuff to do like Wormhole hunting, Rainbow Rocket etc. Personally I loved it but you decide on your own
