The problem with megas, aesthetically, is that they came up like 2 gens too early. Gamefreak back then, absolutely had no clue of how to pull off "it gets tougher without being an evolution" while also not overlapping with form changes. If you look at dynamaxes, regardless of how you feel about the concept, they tend to handle the idea more gracefully(look at blastoise ans venusaur).
Maybe if they design new megas in current gen they'll get em right this time

What if some Pokemon's mega forms got added into the game as straight up evolutions?

A lot of them were designed to be temporary powerups, so they just look like "Absol, but with wings". I don't think the majority of them really differentiate themselves from the base form enough to make good stand-alone Pokemon.
