You guys know Christians were also calling Pokémon satanic right? That’s not a good excuse for why he never got as popular.
I thinks it’s probably the design, it’s a unique cute/eerie mascot but it’s not going to be wildly loved by all. Not to mention the jester look turns off those who hate clowns
Pikachu on the other hand is the perfect combination of cute/cool with a concept most people love, that being an electric mouse (people love mice in fiction yet hate the real things)

Yes, but Pokemon wasn't actually promoting anything related to Satanism. You can literally tame and fight alongside demons and polytheistic "heathen" gods in SMT. And, of course, literally fight God or his angels. SMT's creators of course don't intend to trap their players in Hell or anything but when a fluffy yellow electric rat is considered the devil, literal devils are probably a no-go.

There's not many angels in early game, and you can't have duplicates in your party.
Meaning in early game you wouldn't have a full party and you'd be pretty limited, in a game where you can get easily wiped by random encounters if you have a bad weakness matchup.
So it would, at the very least, be really hard in early game
