Once you gain access to Abra and Nidoking the game's difficulty drops really hard. The disadvantage only lasts for like a single gym at best. I dunno why that anon was making a big deal about it.

That's the thing, it's not really a large margin. I am assuming he is talking FRLG since Milotic is a thing. The idea of a starter disadvantage would be an issue in early game since you would have less options to work with but right after Brock you gain access to two really good pokemon. I would get it if it was a solo run (self imposed gimping) but an overleveled charmilion could probably just abuse ember anyways (I forgot if Onix had rock tomb in that game). I never got this "Charmander is hard mode" argument.
