I hated that part of gen 7. Made it easily the worst generation. It was a guided tour from set to set watching some dumbass drama. Gen 5 did this too but the sidekicks actually feel like sidekicks and there is actual exploration and rewards for doing so.

As much as I liked sun and moon, this was a glaring issue with the story to me, it really felt like the playable character was just shoved into the plot, I know some of the other games also do that kind of, but it doesn't feel that way when played, you have to think about it.
Sun and moon should have made you play as lillie or gladion
