Cartoonish is good. When they go for "realistic" we get disasters like swsh. Just see how the artstyle of the gyarados clashes with the world around it

If they didn't used chibi overworld, they would no doubt remove the tile overworld, therefore fucking up the original Sinnoh routes, likely turning them into the same constant hallway bullshit we've been getting since the 3ds era.

If chibi = having tile overworld, that is a perfectly fine tradeoff

Because they were trying to emulate the original games' style. DPPT have chibi overworld sprites and full-body in-battle trainer sprites.
