Because no one did. Everyone hated energy cards because you always had a zillion of them. I don’t remember a single person who actually played the game. Everyone just wanted to complete their collections, using any means necessary

I remember the first time I tried playing the game with a friend he just wanted to play his Poliwrath turn 1 and attack without energy cost. Nobody cared about the game other than the HP and attack numbers

Yup. My friends and I always thought energy cards were just damage multipliers and so we just stacked a ton on every mon so they always OHKO'd

It puts a smile on my face thinking back to all the super high demand cards me and my friends mistreated in elementary school. It’s not even that we were intentionally destroying them, it goes as OPs example, you don’t think about what happens to them when you cram them in your pocket as a kid. Nope, was the same here, collecting and trading was all anyone ever wanted to do.

I actually had never played the game or learned it’s rules until about a year ago, I picked up the online version for something to do at work. I was a little surprised at how simplistic and easy to pick up it is. I guess for decades I assumed no one played it because it was too complex.
