Mega Evolution seems like a natural progression of sorts. Pokémon could already evolve as one of the core concepts of the series, so this was like a super powerful but temporary "further state" evolution.
"Pokémon becomes really really big as a super state" does not feel like a natural progression. It feels like something that only works in a very specific controlled setting. It feels arbitrary, it feels contrived, it feels extremely specific, it feels like it's going to be dropped immediately and like it has less staying power as a result.
Either way, they're both just nuke buttons, much like Z-Moves, and Game Freak feels compelled to include a different nuke button every Gen starting with Gen VI.
