How come XY is sandwiched between two great generations with a lot of personality (BW/2 and SM/USUM) yet it's so fucking bland?

It does, all 3D pokemon are using the models made for pokedex 3D, with a few minor adjustments or with different textures. Gen 8 also had significantly less pokemon included

Growing pains I would say.
Still one of my fav gens, but you can tell it shat the bed early on.
The game feels fucking great up untill around the 3rd gym, then you're just rushed through the gyms with nothing really filling it. Before then there's solid variety of mon, little events stuff between then it's just, gym, gym, gym E4 done.

It doesn't matter if the gen 8 models were made from scratch, if they were slightly tweaked from previous gens' models, or if they're exactly the same. The point is that they look similar enough to what we've had for the past decade that some people can't help but feel like the games are artistically bankrupt at this point. Personally, I think the models and animations are fine, but I don't blame anyone who's tired of seeing them.
