Are people really that bad at facial pattern recognition? I always have to try really hard to see the wrong face, like Cradily's ring patterns supposedly being its eyes; I just can't see it unless someone points it out.

Yes but humans are much smarter and better at processing images than dumb fish, they shouldn't be falling for these tricks, especially not with a cartoon animal rather than a real animal. The "irises" being of the same color as the surrounding skin, and the similar yellow ring on its belly, should be a dead giveaway that it is a fake eyes pattern.

There's other examples but this one's the funniest. Point of the matter is, our lizard brain processes everything first, and our lizard brain is atrocious at image processing and would GLADLY fall for this.
