Japs love using Christian symbolism. I.E. in the original Zelda games, Link's "Book of Magic" was straight-up called "The Bible", he had a cross on his shield, and there was official artwork of him praying to Jesus on the cross. All of this stuff got censored by Nintendo of America though.

OS was a lot more lax and loose with what it could and couldn't do because it was originally only meant to run for as long as the Indigo League and probably Johto as your typical 90's adaptational anime, but then Pokemon got SO big through Pokemania that TPC had to be made and then TPC started pulling executive meddling as they were in the process of producing Johto's episodes, leading to the notorious GS Ball situation and a severe decline in quality until they got back on track with Hoenn.
