The argument is about whether this is the case for Leaf and Green(which, by having different names, break the rule) or they're just different characters(thus explaining different names).
As not only they have different names but also do not fill the same role in the games they appear in (one is a playable character and the other an NPC, and remember that only Red had the privilege to be both in the main games) then they clearly don't follow the general rules the others do.
The other mildly similar case(and even considering them similar IS favoring the other side) is Kris/Lyra and we have an official product treating them as different characters. Thus, people who actually bother with the official material consider Green and Leaf them different characters and not AU counterparts, not to mention all their named outings are from the recent period, all aimed at hardcore fans, and all in an era where TPC oversees everything.
People who blindly parrot what their favorite youtuber tells them(AKA most of the fanbase) will say they're the same because huh, purse.
