Except for the part where Tajri only came up with the idea, when he saw nintendo link cables and thought of a game for the system he could use the cable to trade items, like he'd wanted to do back in the 80's with Sugimori who had the same game and items Tajiri needed for his playthrough.
Sony never had a chance to acquire it, it was backed by Nintendo and they even gave Tajri Miyamoto to help him figure out how to turn his idea into reality.

The thing is that Nintendo are notorious for making third-party developers walk a thin tightrope (I guess it's debatable if GF are third-party given Iwata and Miyamoto both had a hand in).
I just get this feeling GF could shit in a box and Nintendo would still turn a blind eye. It's only recently with SwSh that the fortunes of the mainline series have turned around, as sad as that is to say.

They're second party, independent, work closely with a publisher to make exclusive games (even in the early days of their first 8 releases, 5 were for Nintendo systems).
No, Nintendo don't expect anything from Game Freak but the kiddy core games they've always made, to continue pushing the brand at the children of the world. Iwata actually set up TPC to completely run the brand outside core game development, to allow Creatures, Nintendo and Game Freak to divest themselves largely from splitting their attention between their own projects and handling the biggest kiddy brand (then the most popular kiddy brand) on the planet.

In fact, I'd say i'ts worse, while FF did get ported westwards at tthe start, most people's first experience of it would have been on Playstation, thus to the majority it IS a sony-made game.
