Which version should I play? The base sun and moon games or the ultra versions? Never played either because I never had a 3ds.

Seriously though, Moon version has a feature where the day and night are swapped. So if you play at Midnight, it'll be noon in-game and vice-versa (you can swap between the normal and reverse mode in post-game in both version). Decide entirely based on whether you want the normal clock or the reversed one.

I'd recommend the Ultra versions. The post game isn't substantial but still a lot more interesting than regular Sun and Moon. The trials are more fleshed out and Mantine Surfing is a lot of fun. Story is a bit weaker, but whatever.

Since time displacement will be a moot issue eventually, I'd recommend you pick up whatever version has the exclusive Pokemon that look better to you.

Ultra Sun and Moon fixes a LOT of small issues with the original. For example, the Totem Pokemon originally had very half-assed movesets (Totem Wishiwashi was Water Gun/Rain Dance/Soak/Growl).

The big issue with USUM is that the mid-game climax is completely re-written and the story takes a very sharp turn in a different direction. So all of the character arcs go out the window and the story just becomes about hunting down Necrozma.

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised nobody's made a romhack yet that restores the original story and moves the Necrozma stuff to postgame. That would be the definitive version.

Ultra. The game is pretty meh but its not awful. Lot of good shiny hunts to do though and a lot of pretty unique pokemon fairly early on you can use
