That's the difference between "Nintendo" made games and "Game Freak" made games. Nintendo consider everyone, due to their history in the hardware business knowing they needed to sell the NES to the whole Japanese family - dad, mum and the kids to get market penetration so they'l err on the side of getting everyone on board with the game (there, splatoon, kid-friendly shooter, some of the most fun I've had with a shooter since TF2 ten years ago). Tajiri created Pokémon out of a desire to give kids a chance to explore a wilderness based off Kanto of his youth, designed it specifically to not infer death in battle during normal gameplay and generally envisioned it as a kiddy thing from the get-go. It got popular with the adults, but every game Game Freak have released in the series have all retained that kiddy air started by Red and Green, because that's what sells the brand to the next generation.
