If I were to play a single gen 4 game, should I go with platinum or HGSS?

If you like side content and following Pokemon, then HGSS. If you like a straight-forward journey across a region with a tiny bit of "challenge" beyond spamming A and an actual level curve, then Platinum.

HGSS took GSC's horrendous level curve and made it worse. Didn't raise wild encounter levels either. If not cheating in Rare Candies for the sake of saving time, go with Platinum

Normally yes, you are on level...until you try to add a Pokemon to your team on any route that wasn't at the start of the game. Then it becomes a miserable grind due to how much lower the levels of wild pokemon are compared to trainers.

Platinum is one of the only pokemon games I've never been able to finish. It's just so boring. I wouldn't say HGSS are without their flaws but I'd take them a million times over any of the top 3.
