Yes, Pokemon has been wasted potential since HGSS had following Pokemon that got immediately removed in BW. Legends might be a step in the right direction but Game Freak desperately needs to get some guys from a company like Monolith or something on their team so they can really take it to the next level.

GF has no reason to try and make the games live up to their potential or use their massive amount of money for better games when people will just buy low-effort, low-budget garbage they shit out every year anyway. When trash like SwSh can be the best selling entry in the franchise, there's no reason to actually try. And they obviously don't have the passion anymore to do beyond the bare minimum.

I'll never understand this meme, it's the biggest brand on the planet, reaches millions upon millions of people every year, but because some smooth-brain shut-in had an autistic fixation with *actually being* May/Dawn/Hilda as a kid, they think they deserve the kiddy game series to care they got old, bald and fat.
The only "wasted potential" is the wasted potential of killing a kiddy game trying to re-calibrate it for adult manchildren, given the creator himself said he'd designed it specifically to prevent giving children the wrong ideas.

The games are going that direction smooth brain. I fail to see how utterly changing how they present the looks of the world is somehow good. For what it's worth, they said they keep the looks as so, because they feel realism doesn't work for what they're trying to do.
So that means, backgrounds will never be photorealistic, while the monsters stay cartoony because they sure as shit ain't gonna start working on hair physics, when kids' imaginations have carried the brand for 25 years and again, the fact they're spending time making a fully free-camera game with large open areas (not full open, because they already know kids need a structure and guidance to finshi games they themselves make - even some adults too).
Go make your own open-world pokéomn game, if you can actually make games. Else stop crying a kiddy series doesn't do what every other adult-focused devhouse does. They never had to bother about adults, thanks to the success of the brand with kids from launch.

Honestly, Pokemon is so profitable at this point if they wanted to, they could really affect the zeitgeist/public consciousness anyway they wanted. They don't seem interested in that though; it would require spending quite a bit of money.

Open world is a genre rarely done right, but the Pokemon IP really lends itself to the idea, and it's not like they lack the funds.
Gamefreak is genuinely just afraid of change, it's the same reason they're trying to maintain the "small indie company" status and being happy producing games that would have been viewed as good 10 years ago.

Look at the hyped response for PLA, a game with the same level of visual fidelity as Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2 18 years ago. The response was excitement. Most excited and hyped the Pokemon community has been in ages and it's for a game that looks on par with a PS2 title from 18 years ago. That's how absurdly low the bar is set because GF has done so infinitely little to push the games forward and help them realize their potential.

The key thing with pokemon and most nintendo properties, is it's always the same shit, with spinoffs.
And that's why pokemon is successful. Why farcry always sells, assassins creed etc.
It's always the same shit, with a different coat of paint. It's reassuring.
It's why digimon failed so hard in the games department.
As long as they keep releasing fun side games, it doesn't matter how shit the main series is because it's something that is just a delivery service for new mon and mechanics.

I have high hopes for legends, the fact that a spinoff gets it's own mons etc, may mean we will get more things like that.

I can't because it's true. Gay Freak has spent over two decades remaking the exact same Game Boy game from 1995 with palette swaps when they could've done so, so much with the world. You can drop Pokemon in the most cutesy pink setting or the most edgy black setting and Pokemon would still work.
Pokemon can work with anything. Time, age, era, gender, sex, religion, setting, country, environment, tone, etc.

I fucking loved ghost of tsushima. But by the home stretch, I just wanted the game to be fucking over already.
Cut about 10 hours off the ending and I wouldn't have even noticed.

I been struggling to finish the new farcry. Don't get me wrong, I love farcry and the occasional camp raid game. But I'd much rather have well constructed level designs and paths to go through, than drive to point A. Kill badguy, fast travel to Point B to drive to point C

They should devote way more money to development, but most of it goes to merchandising because that makes waaaaay more fucking money.
Its pretty sad, but the games are just the advertising for all the merch.
If you were a kid who liked pokemon, try to think back at how much merch your parents or you bought. For me, it was A LOT.

None of that would work because Pokemon has a very clear public image. It's a non-violent, non-sexual, family friendly franchise with an emphasis on friendship, teamwork, compassion, and good sportsmanship.

This isn't like Mario where anything is "Mario" as long as it has Mario characters in it, "Pokemon" has a clear definition.

How? It started off that way no matter how it's handled now, the ashime/TPCI and everything else is usually to promote the GAMES not the other way around.

The answer really is the IP needing to change hands though, bc right now said merchandising is indeed holding everything hostage, that line of thought is correct. The discussion should be which studio would be ideal if the license was ever sold.
