For Lucas and Dawn, it's definitely the hair not being black, it looks like a more navy blue colour. At least with the other MCs you could change their hairstyle.

I might've misunderstood them, I just figured by black hairstyles they meant common ones you'd see in that culture.

Most dark skinned anime characters aren't really of that descent, but I wouldn't care nor argue against expanded features in customization.
