I never understand this about ROMhackers, they create a largely derivative work and somehow claim its higher effort when most of the effort comes from the same codebase

I’m not arguing that 3rd versions aren’t low effort or that some people wouldn’t like certain tweaks. My point is that being this excited about being able to tweak a game means that you believe the base of the game is worth keeping. I’ve just never understood this philosophy of ROMhacks being so much amazingly better than the base when 90% of it is reused code.

That's because this is the only thing you can do with the other 3D games. Game Freak usually use their own engine which hasn't been cracked yet. BDSP being made entirely in Unity actually means we have the potential to do a whole lot more with it.
