How do battles actually work in the Pokemon world /vp/ ? The games and anime, and the Origins specials make it seem like trainers actually command their Pokemon on the battlefield. But then there are other things like pic related and Twilight Wings where all trainers do is send out their Pokemon and let them fight without any input.

Which is it and why? Could it be a combination of both?

Much of the battling in special animations are not given commands in order to keep the flow of the battle moving quickly and dramatically. Those scenes aren't meant to showcase the trainers themselves as much as to have sick as fuck visuals related to the stories being told.

Pokemon are like boxers and their trainers are the coaches. Pokemon fight on their own and try to do their best depending on their bond with the trainer, while the trainer analyzes the enemy, strategizes, and then sends out commands. Picture yourself during a Pokemon battle during the games. You're in the first rival battle, and you want to win. You know from past experiences that the rival battle usually hits you once or twice, then tries to growl or sand attack you so you can win more easily. Knowing this, you choose the basic attack moves to get the battle over with quickly. In an actual world with Pokemon the same principle applies, but it's more like a general tactic you give to your Pokemon rather than calling out the moves until a moment arises where you need to tell your mon to switch up tactics or send out a different move to counter enemy strats.

In general, it's the former. Pokemon are commanded by their trainers. Masters has Flint ask Red he commands his Pokemon since he doesn't talk. Red responds by showing that he tips his hit to command them. So yes, in the game and anime canons, Pokemon respond to verbal commands from their trainers. The trainers micromanage every aspect of battle.
