XY actually benefited from this attitude back then and received barely any criticism. ORAS probably got the most criticism, but people were still pissed of at game journalists for the "Too much water" one. Even Gen 7 barely got any hate despite how much it changed the formula. The dexcut was the moment most people started hating on the new games.
