The "features" of affection don't kick in unless you use the following feature. Doing so raises the values high enough where you'll start seeing fag bullshit like the OP. Just playing normally will not trigger this.

I'm at Hearthome and my starter + other mons that I caught early hop when I send them out and tell me how they feel without me ever having them follow me. I'd imagine by the end of the game they will have reached that point.
