It mostly boils down to just finding a nice local game store though. Any decent store that runs pokemon events should be happy to help you learn to play and ease you into the community.
Supply is all kinds of fucked and scalped to hell right now though so have fun! Pay attention to msrp of products so you don't get suckered into getting scalped by your LGS, buy singles, don't buy based on hype, etc, etc.
