I installed this once and when I started a battle for some reason the window got hidden behind my browser so I assumed it crashed. After a couple of hours I closed my browser window only to see that it had been there the whole time and there was a 30-minute long chatlog of my opponent seething like "DO SOMETHING" "TAKE YOUR FUCKING TURN" "FUCKING N00B"

My best friend used to play this until 2009 I think, well after DP came out. To this day he still wants to talk about the gen 3 meta non stop. I never got as good as him, I think he won a bunch online tournaments back in the day.

It was before the phys/special split so there was a lot of stuff that was hilarious but didn't make any sense. Like water was special so crabhammer was special. My friend hated gen 4 with a passion and that combined with Smogon centralizing everything made him and a lot of the really good netbattlers quit. Smogon had the biggest server still back then, but it was pretty easy to just hang out in other ones and only brush shoulders when there were tournaments.

I played time right before sky came out and I've never been able to start another file out of nostalgia, are there lots of major differences or anything between time/darkness and sky that would make it sort of fresh?

Far more than most Pokemon game third versions, actually. A whole bunch of special episodes that are actually pretty good, a really comfy sound test, more postgame and a whole slew of QoL changes and new facilities and stuff that really improve the experience. Definitely the best way to play it and worth playing if you played time/darkness.
