they'll start doing it even without walking, before i even made it to amity square they were already spamming text boxes of them dozing off in battle or that model shake when the battle starts, friendship and affection are tied together so its literally unavoidable, the mon im not currently walking with is the first one to start surviving attacks at 1hp due to affection

I honestly have no problem with the affection mechanic I think it's cool, but it really should have stayed optional. No reason to use friendship like some kind of hostage.

But I still think it should be optional. In XY it was like a small reward for doing those little mini-games in your free time. Tying friendship and affection bonuses together practically makes the game run on auto-pilot..

Love the idea, hate the implementation.
They either need to nerf the effects it gives you, or make the games harder so your neglected Pokemon struggle more until you've earned their trust.
It really does add quite a lot of immersion and SOUL as a mechanic, I just wish the damn thing didn't make the already-easy games even easier.

They could balance it would by making Pokémon disobey if they’re above a certain level if you don’t have enough badges (pretty much what traded Pokémon already do)

It's called a turn-based combat video game with unbalanced mechanics.
If you wanted to really make it immersive, maybe you could make it so that NPC trainer's pokemon sometimes did the same. With that you could realize how AIDS this mechanic is and that there are better ways to make the game more immersive.
