The underground changes are the biggest plus so far, you can get a powerful and diverse team down there before the second gym. All mons down there come with a move they can only get from breeding too.

Yes. NPC Trainers are an absolute joke. The Underground mons are better to train on and are often higher levelled than your own team. They scale to how many gym badges you have.

I was running at low FPS too until I changed the API settings in the Graphics to Vulkan. 30FPS since then. Still random crashes and graphical glitches though so keep autosave on.

Gym Fights have mostly been a joke too. Fantina has changed her Gengar to have Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb and a Colbur Berry too so she's at least somewhat of a challenge.

The underground lets you avoid the Sinnoh Starter Pack team for the most part. Being able to get Houndoom and Gligar early means that Infernape and Staraptor don't feel glued to your team as they do in the originals

You don't even have to conciously grind in the Underworld to get levels. Even catching Pokemon gives you a ton of experience points because they are going to be at your level or higher.

Oh and to put an adendum on how powerful you can get early on; you can buy powerful TM's at Veilstone City (3rd city) for quite cheap a price.
Those include TM's like Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Bulldoze, Psychic, Dazzling Gleam, Swords Dance and Reflect/Light Screen.

One insanely annoying thing is that higher levelled wild Pokemon have signifcantly lower catch rates. Even if its just a single level difference their catch rates just plummet, even when using stronger balls

They're either using planar reflections (reproject the scene from beneath the ground, at a different angle) or the ol' transparent ground with inverted geometry trick. The second trick especially isn't hard to do at all.
