>>48695593 Pokemon doesn't need to be hard. Ideally, it should be the Kirby of JRPGs. But modern Kirby has a surprising level of depth, both in the gameplay and the story, that Pokemon lacks. Pokemon could have a lot more synergy between both, but they have to put out a game every year so I've just given up at this point. Then again I'm the guy who got pissed off by Bravely Default II going from round based combat to speed based, so maybe I've just got terminal autism.
>>48695624I guess, but when the game is theoretically about catching Pokemon and working alongside them, I'd like a reason to just have them around. Maybe I'd think "hey, maybe this would be better to use in this situation" and you wouldn't always think that if they weren't somewhat forced on you. While choice is important, it's just as important for the game to steer the player in the right direction. Players will try to optimize the fun out of the game if you let them, after all.
