Big Youtubers started opening packs, getting high value cards and exaggerating how much they get. Sheep got into the hobby to follow them not realizing how rare these cards are and how not every set has something that is worth what you're spending. It hit old singles as well, tons of cheap stuff spiked because of retards finding out about TCGplayer and other sites that specifically sell cards.

Obviously theft was a small part of this but the bigger thing was fucking scalpers buying up all the stock. Literally, they would stalk the 3rd party card merch guys around as they restocked the stores and get all threatening and buy out the entire shipment as it was unloaded.

My mom would have beat my ass black and blue if she ever found out how often as a kid I would steal a pack of Pokemon or Yugioh cards on the way out of the store. Same with GBA games. If they weren't locked up, it was real easy to just slit the plastic and pull out the game while looking like you were reading the box.
