People work at that company, with salaries and fringe benefits.
People get paid under contracts for the company.
Businesses have operation and real estate costs.
They have artists to pay, money goes to OLM and other studios to make the anime and PokéToon shorts.
There's toys and merchandising to account for and product design doesn't come cheap and Takara-Tomy and Bandai still get paid for taking part. There's the development budget for those Japanese arcade games with gimmicky cabinets and so forth.
My point is the money comes from somewhere and goes back to somewhere. It's not stuffed in some vault where Masuda and Tajiri have money fights with each other. You can't expect the employees at TPCi, Nintendo and Game Freak to starve or not use money profited from Pokémon on other projects, much less the shareholders. The figure is just putting a label on the franchise's success. It doesn't mean that money is being squandered or that only the games alone bring that much revenue for the franchise. At best each generation is a seed that inspires more product to be sold but the money gets spread to many heads.
Sure it's more money than you'll see in your account, but as a multimedia franchise it's still money they want to use wisely, not just for games.
